BioSystems Analysis, Inc. Permanent Trinomial: Supplement [X]
ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE RECORD Other Resignation:
(IPPR 422, Rev. 4/86) Page 3 of 6
29. Land Owner and Address: Catwil Corporation, 6653 Embarcadero Dr., Stockton, CA
95209.
30. Remarks:
(1) Ananian and Rice (1991) recorded a very large area which they referred to as the
They describe this vast area as a large occupation site with numerous house
floors. A total of 46 depressions are depicted on the sketch map. At the time of the
present site recording effort, numerous depressions were observed. However, most of
these depressions were not associated with midden soil or cultural material of any kind.
Soil samples were taken from a number of these non-cultural? depressions. It is thought
that many of these depressions were derived by washouts of non-consolidated soil pockets,
tree stump removal, or borrow pits for levee construction. Only two small areas of
midden soil were discovered during our field visit
This site record describes
(2) Ananian and Rice (1991) reported in their site record for the - that many
burials were recorded since the 1920s. However, after questioning Ananian and Rice,
speaking with Mr. Angelo Brovelli (previous property owner), speaking with Don
McGeein and Marie Moyer, and reviewing all known documentation, I can find nothing
to substantiate their statement.
(3) Confusion remains as to which of the 5 initially recorded sites this site represents.
UTM coordinates identify this site as The site record for -is very
incomplete, not identifying the date of recordation, the recorder, or the nature of the site.
Sa.-:amento State University students have made reference to the site as
he original site record for- -recorded by Grosscup in 1949
described black occupation soil with "some old holes" (identified as previous excavation),
and baked clay objects. The UTM coordinates on this record (filled in by others after the
fact?) would place this site —450 meters to the southeast. Later, was re-recorded
by Riddell (1970). Riddell remarks that Grosscup erroneously placed the site on
CCIC employee, JM, later (9/17/77) described it as
Ridell described this site
as an extensive habitation site which may represent a major late village for the region.
He notes the area was used for borrow at one time. He observed dark midden soil, with
no features and no artifacts. Whether these records correspond with the current location
is uncertain.
