Immediately after recovery, the samples were visually <br /> classified and the ends of the brass tubes were sealed to preserve the natural soil <br /> j moisture content. Selected samples of the surface soils were obtained in a disturbed <br /> condition. All soil samples were taken to the laboratory for classification, with selected <br /> samples designated for testing. <br /> The Boring Logs, Plates No. 2 through 11, contain descriptions of the soils encountered <br /> in each boring. The soils were classified in accordance with the Unified Soil <br /> Classification System. An explanation of that system and other symbols used on the logs <br /> appears on Plate No. 12. In addition, the boring logs show a graphical representation of <br /> the previously-defined penetration resistance or "blow count" obtained during sampling. <br /> 1 LABORATORY TESTING <br /> Selected, undisturbed samples of the soils were tested to determine dry unit weight, <br /> natural moisture content, as determined by ASTM Specification D2216; and unconfined <br /> jcompressive strength, as determined by ASTM Specification D2166. The results of these <br /> tests are included on the boring logs at the depth from which each sample was obtained. <br /> Samples of the surface and near-surface soils were subjected to Atterberg limits tests, as <br /> determined by ASTM Specification D4318, to determine the plasticity characteristics of <br /> the materials. The results of these tests are displayed on Plate No. Al. <br /> Unidimensional consolidation tests, as determined by ASTM Specification D2435, were <br /> performed on selected, undisturbed soil samples to evaluate the compressibility <br /> j properties of the materials. Graphic representations of these tests, which were used in <br /> our settlement analyses, appear on Plate No. A2. <br /> Resistance ("R") value tests, as determined by ASTM Specification D2844, were <br /> conducted on selected samples of the anticipated pavement subgrade soils. These test <br /> results, which were used in our pavement section analyses, are presented on Plates No. <br /> A3, A4 and A5. <br /> } A selected sample of the surface soil was subjected to a compaction test, as determined <br /> 1 by ASTM Specification D1557, to determine the dry unit weight-moisture content <br /> interrelationships of the material. The results of this test are shown in the form of a <br /> curve on Plate No. A6. <br /> Selected samples of the soils anticipated to be present at the lake base were subjected to <br /> flexible wall permeability tests. The results of these tests are shown on Plate No. A7. <br />
