Instream Flow Assessments. Principal investigator on more than 30
applications of the Instream Flow Incremental Methodology(IFIM) on a wide
variety of riverine habitats. Designed unique applications of IFIM to
determine project impacts, quantify inundated habitats, and identify
appropriate instream flow regimes. Conducted habitat mapping and
preference studies and integrated water temperature modeling results with
habitat-flow relationships to evaluate several major water development
projects. Successfully proposed and defended instream flow recommendations
at water rights hearings.
Water Project Impact Assessments. Managed and assisted in designing
comprehensive fish population impact assessment models for anadromous
species in the American River, Sacramento River, and Sacramento-San
Joaquin Delta as part of water-marketing impact studies for the U. S. Bureau
of Reclamation's Central Valley Project. Assessed effects of the Sacramento
River Bank Protection Project on chinook salmon, steelhead trout, striped
bass, and American shad. Conducted multibasin fisheries evaluations of
proposed water management changes on the Nacimiento, San Antonio, and
Salinas Rivers. Developed impact assessment models for small stream and
reservoir trout fisheries for a proposed pumped-storage project in the Sierra
Nevada, California. Designed and conducted state-of-the-art cumulative
impact assessments for several environmental documents on potential basin-
wide effects of water resource projects.
Field Investigations. Managed an intensive, 2-year field inventory project for
the California Department of Fish and Game to sample the San Joaquin
River system for white bass. Designed and managed a sampling, compositing,
and filleting program on the Sacramento River system to provide fish samples
for dioxin contamination evaluations. Designed and implemented a 7-year
aquatic monitoring program to evaluate the effects of hydroelectric
development on trout populations and physical habitat characteristics in a
mountain stream. Coordinated field activities of multiyear studies of
steelhead trout ecology and habitat on the Ventura River and Arroyo de la
Cruz, California. Developed a scoping report for investigations needed on the
Yuba River to evaluate impacts from water transfers. Managed or conducted
numerous other fish population and habitat sampling efforts on streams,
rivers, canals, ponds, lakes, reservoirs, and estuaries.
