wetlands and deep water habitats found within river channels, but does not include wetland
habitats dominated by trees (riparian systems) that occur in the adjacent flood plain.
Riverine habitats are greater than 2 meters in depth or are beyond the depth of rooted
vegetation. The Mokelumne River channel is therefore classified as riverine habitat.
Riparian habitats, as described above, are found contiguous with riverine systems.
Wildlife Associations.
The narrow-corridor and cut-bank nature of the Mokelumne River as it passes along the
property provides a narrow and vertical habitat structure which supports few wildlife
species. The most important element of this habitat type is the steep compacted soil banks.
These provide important habitat for bank- nesting species. Burrows consistent with those
made by belted kingfishers (Cereal allusion) are present, indicating that this fish-eating
species probably nests on the property. In addition, smaller burrows observed during our
surveys may be the result of northern rough-winged swallows .
Lacustrine
According to Mayer and Landenslayer(1988), lacustrine habitats are inland depressions or
dammed riverine channels containing standing water. They may vary from small ponds of
less than one hectare to large areas covering several square miles and can vary from a few
inches to many feet in depth. Typical lacustrine habitats include permanent lakes (Lake
Tahoe) or dammed river sites (Shasta Lake). Tracy Lakes are an intermittent playa type of
lake system. Covering 350 acres (2,300 acre-feet) when fully flooded,Tracy Lakes
function as a lake system from probably January to early or mid-summer(Photo 1). Since
Tracy Lakes flood to an average depth of over 6.5 feet during maximum flood-up, there
would not be functional emergent vegetation during most of the critical winter waterfowl
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
61
