months.
Wildlife Associations.
The small pond on Buckeye Ranch, although impacted by cattle, does support some
waterbirds. Fish-eating species such as pied-billed grebe, double crested cormorant, and
hooded mergansers have been observed foraging in the pond. Waterfowl of various
species can also be observed. During fall migration common snipe (Gallinago gallinago),
greater yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleucus),killdeer(Charadrius vociferus) and other
shorebirds can be found. This pond apparently supports an active beaver lodge, but the
paucity of forage trees in the area may have resulted in abandonment of the lodge. Muskrat
(Ondatra zibethica) burrows can be seen in the dike separating the pond from South Tracy
Lake.
2.56 Cultivated Lands
Vineyards
Vineyards are communities dominated by a single species planted in rows that are
supported by wood or wire trellises. At Buckeye Ranch, approximately 65 acres, located
in the southeastern portion of the property, consist of vineyards (Photo 5).
Wildlife Relationships.
The monoculture, structure, pest control, and disturbance found in vineyards supports few
wildlife species. Flocks of finches, blackbirds, starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), and wintering
yellow-rumped warblers (Dendroica coronata) make up the majority of species seen in
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
62
