management activities associated with the fairways. Poison oak will be eradicated from the
fairways (Zone 2),controlled in the buffer areas and left alone in the forest(Zone 6). As
another example, some drift from turf herbicide application may reach the buffer areas but
is less likely reach the forest (Zone 6).
5.2 Tree Protection Guidelines
Healthy trees will be protected and maintained throughout the ranch. Tree preservation is
part of the evolving design, construction and maintenance process (figure 7 Hortscience
flowchart). Tree inventories will be prepared for all developed areas, including homes,
buildings, leach fields and wells, utility corridors, and roads. Trees will be surveyed for
i
species, height, trunk diameter, drip line diameter, and ground surface at the base. Their
locations will be shown on all improvement plans and every attempt will be made to
accommodate and avoid impacting them during construction. Best efforts coupled with full
mitigation will be used to resolve conflicts on a site by site basis.
Trees are particularly at risk during the construction phase. Construction is defined as any
disturbance of the existing surfaces, soil density,or grade of the land. Construction
activities include the building of homes, club house, stables, the bridge and roads as well
as the installation of the golf course, service lines, wells, and septic systems, and activities
related to enhancement of the lakes.
The importance of following tree protection guidelines is underscored by the length of time
it takes for an oak to respond to an injury. An oak may die ten years after sustaining
damage. Even when injury does not result in death, disturbance will most likely reduce the
tree's life span. When a tree dies, a century or more may pass before a young tree achieves
similar growth and character.
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
105
