All living trees will be protected under these guidelines. The large and picturesque
individual trees are obvious candidates, but the younger and smaller trees which constitute
the replacement generation for the Ranch's mature trees will also be protected. In addition,
fallen dead trees will be conserved wherever possible because of their values to wildlife
and nutrient cycling.
TPZ- The tree protection zone
The TPZ for trees at Buckeye Ranch is defined as follows:
The Tree Protection Zone is a column with a width 1.5 times the diameter of the tree
canopy, and with a height extending three feet above the highest branch and six feet below
the soil surface.
Although only half of a tree is visible, roots - the hidden half- are particularly at risk
during construction. For this reason we will define the tree protection zone broadly and set
the simple goal of avoiding any surface. grade. soil density or other alterations within this
zone. According to our best information, over 90 percent of the trees biomass will be
contained within the TPZ as defined (Hagen 1990). Please notice that on the surface this
area extends well beyond the dripline of the tree. In cases where trees are grouped, the TPZ
will be defined for the grove.
Hazards to Trees
Several tree hazards are regularly encountered on construction sites. Above ground
problems include damage to foliage, branches and trunks from equipment. Trucks and
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
106
