emergent trees were cleared and the known nest tree remains secure.
Planned Golf Course: Negative Impact.
The woodland status of the site does not provide optimal foraging habitat for Swainson's
hawk. However, Swainson's might forage in more open spaces between trees and thus
might be expected to periodically hunt on the property. Interfairway grassland might
provide some foraging habitat for the species particularly when managed with sequential
mowing as per the grasslands plan. The interfairway habitat therefore should not be
considered totally lost to the species. As such, only the acreage altered for fairways, 57
acres, will be impacted. The concept of time-share, as suggested in the Draft E.I.R. is not
a practical solution to mitigate for course development and hawk foraging. Instead habitat
restoration and management within the planned Tracy Lake Area could offset the loss of
habitat.
Twenty-six House Lots: Negative Impact.
All will impact foraging habitat for the hawk and should be mitigated. Approximately 50
acres will be converted.
Roads: Minimal Negative Impact.
The presence of roads either through the forest or in the oak woodland should not impact
the foraging activities of Swainson's hawk. The species often forages near roads in rural
situations.
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
119
