Restore a more natural grassland cycle on the South Tracy Lake Preserve.
Discontinue cattle grazing on the property except as a possible management
tool to diversify cover through controlled grazing. Restoration in this area
will create 400 acres of improved foraging habitat for Swainson's hawks.
Action 2: Restore grassland habitat on irri ag ted pasture
The project proposes the conversion of irrigated pasture, located on the
south-central portion of the property to grassland/vernal pool habitat. Estep
reports that irrigated pasture does not provide as suitable habitat as non-
irrigated and/or natural grasslands for foraging Swainson's hawks. The
creation of natural grasslands interspersed with vernal pools on previously
irrigated pasture will create optimal foraging habitat for Swainson's hawks
on the property. This restoration will create 19 acres of foraging habitat for
Swainson's hawk.
Action 3: Restore grassland and manage for raptor foraging on
interfairwayspaces.
Restore and manage interfairway grassland to improve foraging opportunities. The
bulk of the course will be interspersed amongst the oak woodland habitat which
provides marginal foraging habitat for Swainson's hawks. Improving cover type
in the interfairway areas (which in some cases are wider than 400 feet) will provide
foraging possibilities for the species. In addition American kestrel, white-tailed
kite, northern harrier, and great horned owls Bubo vir inianus) will forage within
this interfairway habitat.
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
122
