Action 4: Carry out grassland management plan
Implement grassland management plan as outlined in the resource
management plan (Table 10). This plan will create variable grass depths,
and grassland phenology thatrovides optimal cover and foraging
P P g g
opportunities for Swainson's hawk.
Goal 3: Restore and manage seasonal marsh habitat to coincide with
Swainson's hawk foraging needs.
Action 1: Restore seasonal marsh habitat .
Since Swainson's hawks raise their chicks during late spring through early
summer, with fledging occurring between mid- July and mid-August, the
proposed restoration and management plan for the seasonal marsh habitat
will provide foraging habitat during a critical period of chick development
(Table 9 of the resource plan). Seasonal marsh habitat in South Tracy Lake
will be managed as a summer-dry and moist-soil marsh system. Both
habitats will provide excellent cover for rodents, small birds and insects.
This habitat type is a dramatic improvement on existing farmed land of the
lake bottoms (sudan grass and other crops would exclude foraging during
the summer months). Restoration of seasonal marsh habitat will create 30
acres of foraging habitat.
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
123
