Goal 6: Control and regulate use of pesticides and rodenticides.
Action: Develop a chemical management plan.
The planned control and regulated use of pesticides and rodenticides on the
fairways will reduce opportunities for secondary poisoning of raptors
foraging within the interfairway spaces. Land owners have begun
developing an integrated pest management plan for the property that will
take into account the needs of raptors utilizing the property. Golf course
design and construction can eliminate runoff from fairways and greens
irrigated during the summer. Secondary poisoning is rare when care is
taken with the choice of chemicals and their application. The land owners
are committed to professional use of chemicals.
Goal 7: Schedule course construction to minimize impact on known
nesting Swainson's hawks.
Action: Limit disturbance for nesting hawks.
Prior to project construction, the land owners will determine if Swainson's
hawks are nesting on the property. If an active nest(s) is located, the
owners will provide a buffer of 400 yards around the nest. No construction
within this buffer will occur until the chicks have fledged, generally by the
end of July. Future construction of housing sites will follow the same
criteria. Once construction is completed, the land owners will limit
disturbance around nesting Swainson's hawks to the best of their ability,
but are not responsible if the hawks choose to nest in an area of human
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
126
