winter and planting them in scattered locations throughout the site. This technique has
been employed with much success at Grizzly Island Wildlife Management Area(Solan
County).
Clones of wildrye and sedge will be dug up (on-site or within a several-mile radius) and
planted at appropriate sites throughout the Ranch. Since different clones are likely to be
genetically and ecologically different, it will be desirable to transplant a number of clones in
a variety of different sites.
Monitoring the first transplanting experiments will be necessary to determine success.
Results will be used as the basis to judge the feasibility of planting in other areas.
Benefits to Wildlife
The primary benefit for wildlife is the increased dense cover provided by wildrye and
sedge meadow habitat. Waterfowl nesting opportunities will be enhanced. Small rodents
and predators will also forage within these grassy areas.
scrub jay yellow-billed magpie
American crow western bluebird
American robin northern mockingbird
common starling yellow rumped warbler
rufous-sided towhee California towhee
lark sparrow savannah sparrow
golden-crowned sparrow white-crowned sparrow
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
157
