7.23 Oak-buckeye Savanna
Goals:
• To preserve, enhance and restore the tree component of the oak-buckeye savanna,
especially its relationships with wildlife management objectives and golfing activities.
Objectives:
• To implement various arboricultural techniques to preserve and lengthen the life of the
old trees that are in a serious state of decline.
• To protect the existing trees from impacts relating to golf and other human disturbance
factors.
• To restore the tree component of the savanna areas through standard restoration
techniques refined for Buckeye Ranch in the pilot project.
• To develop a monitoring program, to be implemented by a competent biologist, to insure
that all oaks and buckeyes in the savanna area have at least 3 seedlings growing in the
outer dripline canopy areas and groups of trees have at least one seedling per 20 foot
center around the dripline radius of the group within a 5 year period.
Overview
The oak-buckeye savanna, though natural in appearance, has declined in terms of tree
density in the last half century. The management and restoration of this area has both local
and statewide significance, since both valley oak and blue oak appear to be regenerating
poorly in many areas of the state (Muick and Bartolome 1986).
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
158
