The Species List
The following species are native to the Buckeye Ranch savanna . Restoration efforts will
include direct seeding, protection of existing seedlings and saplings, and enhancement of
natural regeneration, including the strategic placement of wood chip mulch to encourage
blue jays to plant acorns.
Blue oak(Quercus douglasii) Blue oak is a deciduous tree with shallow-lobed,
bluish leaves. The tree is short and compact, averaging from 20 to 40 feet in height, with a
spread of about 20 to 30 feet. Blue oak is well-adapted to dry sites and often drop their
leaves early during drought years. Blue oak is found throughout the Buckeye Ranch
savanna but not in the forest or adjacent to the river. Blue oak acorns are the first to ripen in
the fall, and take only one season to mature. Seedlings germinate quickly and have thick,
i
long taproots. Seedlings are known to sprout repeatedly from the base if grazed or burned.
Valley oak(Quercus lobata) Valley oak is a deciduous tree with deeply lobed
leaves. Valley oak forms tall and statuesque individuals, averaging from 50 to 100 feet in
height with a spread of about half to three-quarters of height in open locations. Valley oak
prefers deep, well-drained soils with shallow water tables. On Buckeye Ranch, valley oak
is found in both the savanna and the forest. Valley oak acoms are larger than those of blue
oak and take only one season to mature. Seedlings appear later than blue oak and coast live
oak and appear to put most of their first year energy into their large taproot. Valley oaks
seedlings are fast-growing and can reach heights of 20-30' in 10 years.
Interior live oak (Q. wislizenii). Interior live oak is an evergreen oak, with spiny
leaves. It is a moderate sized tree reaching 30 to 70 feet in height and is often as wide as it
is tall, with lower branches often reaching the ground. In ungrazed savannas, this oak can
take on a globe-like appearance. In contrast to blue oak, live oak prefer moist soils. On
Buckeye Ranch live oak is the dominant forest tree and is also found throughout the
savanna. Acorns are narrow and small and take two years to mature.
