over-irrigation. Commonly used fungicides include benomyl, chloroneb, chlorothalonil
and others.
Fertilizer Contamination
Potential pollution from a golf course is considered to be a non-point source, surface
runoff water and subsurface flow being the major mechanisms of pollution. The variations
and extent of non point sources of pollution are influenced by variations of type of soil,
climate, topography, subsurface geology, land use, land management strategies and
intensity of chemical application(Balough and Walker,1992). For nonpoint pollution, the
greater the volume of water applied, the greater the potential for nonpoint source loading.
Turfgrass managers usually apply sufficient quantities of fertilizers to keep turfgrass in a
high quality condition. When fertilizer contamination is a problem, phosphorous and
nitrogen are the main contributors. Phosphorous contamination is the main nutrient
associated with eutrophication and degradation of water quality. Soluble forms of nitrogen
can find their way into ground water. All of these chemicals are used in the management
of golf courses.
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
227
