foraging habitat for Swainson's hawks on the property. This restoration will create
19 acres of foraging habitat for Swainson's hawk.
5) Restore and manage interfairway grassland to improve foraging opportunities for
raptors. Improving cover type in the interfairway areas (which in some cases are
wider than 400 feet) will provide foraging possibilities for the species.
6) Implement grassland management plan as outlined in the resource management
plan (Table 10, p. 149). Create variable grass depths, and grassland phenologythat
provides optimal cover and foraging opportunities for Swainson's hawk.
7) Restore and manage seasonal marsh habitat to coincide with Swainson's hawk
foraging needs.Since Swainson's hawks raise their chicks during late spring through
early summer, with fledgling occurring between mid- July and mid-August, the
proposed restoration and management plan for the seasonal marsh habitat will
provide foraging habitat during a critical period of chick development(Table 9 of the
Resource Plan). Seasonal marsh habitat in South Tracy Lake will be managed as
a summer-dry and moist-soil marsh system. Both habitatswill provide excellentcover
for rodents, small birds and insects. This habitat type is a dramatic improvement on
existing farmed land of the lake bottoms (sudan grass and other crops would
exclude foraging during the summer months). Restoration of seasonal marsh habitat
will create 30 acres of foraging habitat.
8) Increase nesting habitat on the property. Restore live oak forest habitat. Restoration
of live oak woodland was begun in 1991 with the planting of approximately 3 acres
of mixed oak species. In addition, the Resource Plan calls for increasing understory
cover within the existing forest. Planting cottonwood trees in low swales will provide
increased, future nesting opportunities. Appropriate elevations and sites will be
located by trained restoration ecologists.
9) Restore riparian habitat along South Tracy Lake shoreline. The planned restoration
of riparian habitat along South Tracy Lake will recreate historical forest conditions
around the lake. The removal of cattle from the area will provide an ecological
release for willows and other small trees along the shoreline of the Lake. Planting
cottonwood and valley oaks will create a diverse band of riparian vegetation that will
benefit a wide variety of species. The restoration of this habitat will create 30 acres
(70% tree cover) that will benefit Swainson's hawk.
10) The planned restoration of patches of "greentree"(winter flooded)woodland habitat
will again provide a mixture of understory and canopy trees that provides important
nesting opportunitiesfor Swainson's hawks. The restoration of this habitat will create
20 acres of nesting habitat for Swainson's hawk.
11) Limit public access onto the property.
a) Close Forest Lake Road at the eastern boundary of the property to reduce
traffic and human disturbance to fields north of the property.
4
