In
reviewing the document, we found ourselves with a number of
questions yet unanswered and many conflicts to be resolved.
It is clear that if we had the ideal situation that we would view
the resources found within and outside the project boundaries as a
cultural complex. An area where Native people choose to live,
raise their families, practice their religion and conduct other
important aspects of their life. But this is not an ideal
situation. Rather, we need to only look at the surrounding land
parcels to note that as a result of agriculture and residential C1
development.. that the environment has been heavily modified in
response to the changing needs of society. What remains is an
island which contains some very important aspects of our cultural
heritage.
We believe that what remains were left by one of the Maximos. The
Maximos were an important family and Charles Maximo resided in the
Ione are until the 1940 ' s when he passed away. A number of our
members are related to the Maximos and this is why our interest in
the project.
The proposal under consideration offers an alternative to the
activities which have resulted in the changes to the surrounding
environment which affected other cultural heritage sites. We are
pleased to note the willingness to modify the project to take into
account these important remains of our past.
As previously noted, we would prefer to view the area as a cultural
environment and if this was a park and we were interpreting the
resources to the public, we would do just that. However, we are
HI-47
