2 . Vernal Pools
The owner has stated a commitment to maintain and
enhance a variety of aquatic habitats on the
property, including restoration of species such as
the Tiger Salamander, even if the species is not C10
found on the site. This means that if adequate
habitat for an endangered species exists on-site,
but the species is not found because of past impacts
off-site, the owner is willing to establish a
population of the species in conjunction with
appropriate state agencies.
3 . Aquatic Environment
We are presently involved in several significant
areas of research concerning the potential for
leaching, run-off, and so forth from chemicals
presently used in golf course management. This
effort is aimed at answering questions that we, and
other members of the public, have concerning
chemical use and the environment.
our approach is to promote what we call "Integrated
Resource Management" as a management strategy. By
this we mean, the use of insect-eating birds and
other species to control "pest" insects, the use of
plant species that will grow well with little
maintenance both on the playing surfaces and in
non-play areas, and the construction of greens in C11
accordance with United States Golf Association
specifications. To maintain a golf course in a
condition required by most golfers, it is not
possible to completely dispense with chemical use.
However, with an active Integrated Resource
Management approach, the use would be minimal.
Likewise, with proper vegetative planning, even a
minimal amount of run-off of chemical use should
pose no problems. Finally, if vegetation is
selected that is appropriate for the area,
irrigation requirements will be positively effected.
In summary, we believe that the Buckeye Ranch property should
be protected to the maximum extent possible. We believe that given
other priorities and funding considerations, it is unlikely that
the property will be purchased and managed as a sanctuary or refuge C12
by private or public agencies. We believe, given the state of the
land surrounding the property in question that the highest
likelihood of additional development on this site would be the
logging of trees and conversion to agriculture both of which would
totally destroy all significant resource value of the property.
III-51
