BUCKEYE RANCH ( 4- 1-92) 6
carried out in a very short period of time . As can be seen below
the soils collected provided excellent results .
SOIL CHEMISTRY OF ELEVEN SAMPLES COLLECTED ON
JANUARY 24 , 1992
LOCATION PHOSPHATES pH Carbonate Color
100 yards east of dam( 2 )* 4 . 5 6 . 2 none 10YR 3/2
130 yards east of dam( 1 ) 4 . 25 6 . 5 none 10YR 3/2 . 5
150 yards east of dam( 20 ) 4 . 5 6 . 2 none 10YR 3/2
Lot 14 , east side 6 . 0 7 . 3 2 IOYR 3/2 . 5
Lot 14 , north side 5 . 75 7 . 7 3 10YR 3/2 . 5
Lot 19 , 15 ft . depression 2 . 5 5 . 9 none 10YR 4/3
Lot 19 , 30 ft . depression 4 . 25 6 . 1 none 10YR 3/2. 5
Lot 21 1 . 0 5 . 4 none 10YR 4/4
East of Lot 21 1 . 0 6 . 0 none 10YR 4/4
150 yards west of Lot 1 6 . 0 7 . 5 2 10YR 3/2 . :
Middle of NE Quad Sec . 9 6 . 0 7 . 5 2 l0YR 3/3
C83 Phosphates : A value of 1 . 0 means essentially absent while a value
of 6 . 0 represents a highly concentrated occurrence .
PH: A value of 6 . 9 or less represents acidic . 7 . 0 is neutral , and
7 . 1 and above is alkaline .
Carbonates : The higher the number the greater the concentration
in the sample .
Soil Color : 10yr represents variations of brown with 3/2 dark
grayish brown , 4/3 dark brown , 4/4 dark yellowish brown , 3/3 also
dark brown .
*Locations 2 . 1 , and 20 on the map on file at the Institute of
Archaeology and Cultural Studies at CSUS correspond with the
three samples of soil from east of the dam. These locations may
have been marked on the map by John Beck when he visited the area
in the early 1970s .
The samples from Lot 14 were at a major archaeological deposit
that is on the periphery of the "LAKE SITE" . the sample from 150
yards west of Lot 1 is an archaeological site and may be a
remnant of CA-SJO-13 or one of the other previously recorded
sites , and the sample from the middle of Section 9 is from an
archaeological site on the southeastern side of Tracy Lake that
was not recorded by the consulting archaeologists . These four
samples represent the highest phosphates , are alkaline , contain
carbonates and tend to have a grayish cast , when dry, to their
dark brown color . It is quite clear that the samples taken from
Lot 21 and adjacent to it are from non archaeological deposits .
The. samples taken from 100 to 150 yards east of the dam may
represent an older archaeological site which has had its
carbonates leached away and has returned to a pH similar to the
surrounding soils . The moderate level of phosphates suggests
that some human activity has occurred in this location . The
samples from the depressions on Lot 19 are not conclusive . The
presence of phosphates might represent human activity but the
M46
