ANE-3106449701 : 4- 8-02 : 6:29k.1I : KINKO'S UNIVERSITY- 4
Muick 418/92 Comments on Buckeye Ranch EIR
3-12 #2 Tree pruning and removal:
For the purposes of the Management Plan the
Ranch is divided into zones. The intensive use
zones, i.e. residential, roads and golf course areas,
encompass about 15% of the ranch (120 acres). 0123
This is the area where "park standards" are
planned and the arborist will be employed.
Whenever possible dead and dying trees will- be
left within intensive use zones IF they do not pose
a threat to human health and safety.
In the remaining 855 of the ranch, the 675 acre
"natural area", all trees will complete their natural
cycles. This means that dead and dying trees will C124
be left standing. Fallen trees will be left on the
ground and not harvested for firewood (p 53-57
and Appendix 2, p. 1-5).
3 - 13 Landscaping. The stated point of this impact is
to avoid competition with natural plant
communities. Virtually no native plants, besides C125
trees, are growing on the grasslands and savannas
where the owners plan to locate their homes. The
restriction of home landscaping species to native
trees and shrubs species list is unduly restrictive,
impractical and unenforceable.
More realistic, environmentally sensitive and
enforceable guidelines would be to 1) adopt a list
of invasive species that cannot be planted, 2)
require the use of Buckeye Ranch parent stock for
native trees and shrubs and 3) restrict non-local C126
and exotic species of oaks and buckeyes. This was
done in the Buckeye Ranch Management Plan. On
page 59, a list of restricted landscaping species list
is included based on work by Dr. Elizabeth
McClintock, California Academy of Science and
California Native Plant Society. Dr. McClintock is an
expert on invasive exotic species. If restricted
plants are found on the ranch the plan states that
"they will be eradicated immediately."
III-112
