1 V
March 12, 1992
San Joaquin Planning Commission
1810 E. Hazelton
Stockton, CA 95205
Re: Prehistoric/archaeological sites
Buckeye Ranch (Brovelli Woods)
Gentlemen and Madam:
After reading through Appendix G Cultural Resources contained
in the EIR concerned with above property, I feel compelled to
join the many voices in opposition to the proposed development
which would obliterate the historicity contained on this 'site.
I realize that such decision about this property, as to whether
this land should be developed into homes to attract people to
leave homes located further West or to move up, is among the
many you must agonize about; however, to literally destroy the
history of the land, thus preventing oldtimers' families and
newcomers' families,alike,from knowing California's history,
should be a responsibility of the planning commission to shoulder
with a "no project" decision. C249
This area is an educational resource which needs to be set aside,
preserved, and maintained "as is" for future careful educational
use. Because materials recovered in the Lodi area, and elsewhere,
prove habitation as early as 5500 BC, surely this date, alone, is
one which has and will garner further attention and study of this
fragile area.
1 The effect of preservation IS important because the area is connected
to early inhabitants, as well as more modern settlers who are an
important part of California farming history; the area is important
because of its dating and qualifies as an "important archaelogical
resource" under all five of the CEQA criteria that apply to pre-
historic archaelogical sites (as listed in the appendix, Pg. 22.)
In fact, this area fulfills A. through E. of Appendix K, Section
III of CEQA.
I respectfully request that the commission reach a No Project
decision in this matter.
Sincerell ,
BbLrbara Bishop Graham
Clements Community Cares
III-147
