answered.
Funding for services like fire and police protection should be
specified prior to approval of the project. In addition, fire
protection is an issue that warrants further discussion. The DEIR
C254 encourages the uninhibited growth of natural plants, shrubs and
grasses in the project. Impact 4 . 7-5 indicates that domestic
landscaping may compete with native plants . However, this
landscaping ( lawns) may assist in fire protection by providing a
buffer to the homes . The DEIR also indicates that removal of
cattle which graze on the property will be a beneficial impact.
Please remember that the cattle grazing helps control the growth of
grasses that could eventually become a fire hazard.
Impact 4 . 7-6 indicates the potential for wildland fires will
increase if the project is approved. While we agree with the
C255 impact, we do not agree with the provisions prohibiting control
burns . As a recommendation, the San Joaquin Farm Bureau would
state that a plan should be developed for the management of the
subject property that will insure the safety of the homes in the
project provided a fire is started. Remember, the "natural" way a
forested area clears itself of excess vegetation is a forest fire.
Whether it is started by nature or inadvertently, 'a fire is
obviously dangerous .
To conclude our summary of the DEIR, we were pleased to see
that the DEIR addresses the impact of conflicts between
residential/agricultural uses . It is important to have the impacts
to agriculture minimized if this project is approved.
Sincerely,
Pc,-L
PAUL M.
