In order to avoid known habitation and burial sites, the proposed access road and
bridge to Davis Road shall be moved 800 feet to the east from where it is proposed to
cross the Mokelumne River. The existing dirt road should be left alone, and because
of previous disturbance, a three-foot layer of fill should be added.
The southern margin of the proposed irrigated pasture shall be relocated 600 feet
north of the southern border of the property to prevent further degradation of the site
as a result of irrigation.
Areas designated for storage of excavated soil shall be moved to the eastern portion
of the project site.
All sewage leach fields shall be excluded from the area of high archaeological
sensitivity.
Native American (Miwok) concerns shall be addressed, and development shall be
done with their consultation. An ethnographer shall determine the relationship
between these sites and Miwok oral and traditional history.
A Native American monitor shall be present during all land altering or excavation
activities.
A qualified archaeological monitor shall be present during all land altering or excava-
tion activities.
Prior to further land disturbance, known sites shall be mapped by a professional
surveyor and a qualified archaeologist; and all existing collections obtained from this
site shall be analyzed, photographed, correlated, and if possible, collected in one
place.
Known sites shall be tested to determine the extent and type of contents, plus depth,
integrity, age, and intrasite patterning (e.g. in depth, horizontal extent and artifact
density), as follows:
1. For the newly recorded habitation sites (CA-SJO-0237,-0238, -240), at least
eight one by two meter test units in each should be excavated to the sterile
level (approximately two meters); at least 20 obsidian hydration samples and
at least five carbon - 14 samples should be dated for each test unit.
2. For the lake site (CA-SJO-0011), at least 20 one by two meter test units should
be excavated until a sterile level is reached (approximately three meters); at
least 30 obsidian samples and at least 10 carbon - 14 samples should be
dated for each test unit.
3. For the river site (CA-SJO-0043), at least 10 one by two meter test units should
be excavated to a level of sterility (approximately three meters); at least 25
obsidian samples of carbon - 14 should be dated for each test unit.
4. Recordation, including mapping and photography should follow the standard
procedures of the State Department of Parks and Recreation.
—13—
