Ignorance is no longer an excuse. We must change our ways.
On January 10th, 1993 I was privilaged to tour the area known as
Brovelli Woods and found the experience to be one of wonder at the
beauty of the untouched land with alluvial plains which, on that day,
were filled with water. I was disappointed to see that the closed-
canopy live oak riparian forest had been partially violated by the
cutting of over 400 trees in several swaths which we were told was to
provide fairways for a private golf course proposed by the developer.
If the 870 acres can be preserved, over many years nature will possibly
restore the closed-canopy to its original beauty and uniqueness .
During the tour I saw deer, geese, hundreds of red-wing black birds
in a huge fly-over and many spiecies unknown to me. The tour rein-
forced my belief that the area should not be touched any further by D145
man, but should be preserved as a one of a kind piece of the history
of San Joaquin County and the state.
If there is a possibility of finding a conservancy group (or any
other way) to come up with funding to save this property for those who
come after us , we hope you will allow concerned citizens the time we
need to make this happen. This would be in the best interests of all
the citizens of our county and the special interests of the Indians
who previously inhabited the area where their ancestral remains are
found.
The beauty of this spot is obvious to all who have seen it, including
those who have chosen to try to place 26 homes upon it. But certainly
those same people must be aware of what even limited development will
do to destroy this pristine, rare, one of a kind area left in our San
Joaquin valley. While I don' t yet know the legal ramifications in this
matter, I do urge you to grant time to the many concerned citizens like
myself for the opportunity to save this area so that generations to come
can see what our valley really looked like before the face of the land
was changed and not have to imagine it as I did before January 10th. I
want to see this wonderful sense of wonder I experienced to be available
to every future generation.
Sincerely,
Phone: 369-2185 anet C. Pruss
VI-117
