I <br /> longer recognizable If the symptoms appear critical, persist, or get worse, medical attention <br /> shall be sought immediately <br /> f <br /> Symptoms of heat stroke include delirium, fainting, and hot, dry, flushed skin <br /> Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition and immediate medical attention must be sought if any <br /> symptoms of heat stroke are observed Table 4-2 describes some of the common signs and <br /> symptoms of heat-related illnesses <br /> Cold stress is not likely to be a problem during this project unless the weather <br /> becomes unseasonably cold During periods of extreme cold (32°F and below) the body may <br /> require extra protection There are two forms of cold stress which may be encountered during <br /> this work effort These include hypothermia and frostbite <br /> Hypothermia is caused by exposure to freezing or rapidly dropping temperatures <br /> iSigns include shivering, apathy, listlessness, sleepiness and (sometimes) rapid cooling of the <br /> body to less than 95°F Unconsciousness and freezing of the extremities may also occur <br /> Frostbite is the freezing or partial freezing of some parts of the body Fingers, <br /> toes, and ears are the most susceptible <br /> If weather warrants concern of cold stress a work/rest regime will be established <br /> that shall provide adequate rest periods for warming personnel All breaks will be taken in a <br /> heated area Adequate liquids will be provided to replace lost body fluids to ensure that the <br /> cardiovascular system functions properly Workers should drink a cup or two during rest breaks <br /> Replacement fluids can be fresh water or an electrolyte solution Salt tablets will not be used <br /> Extra clothing such as thermal underwear or light loose layers of clothing can be worn beneath <br /> protective garments Wet OT damp clothing will be removed as soon as possible Employees will <br /> not be assigned other tasks during rest periods All employees will be informed of the signs and <br /> symptoms or cold stress along with the importance of adequate rest, acclimatization, and proper <br /> diet in this prevention <br /> 4-4 <br />
