a
ERI 243832.801 GTE C.O..Manteca.California June R 1999
The soil samples collected from the first stockpile, and the native soil samples collected from the
bottom of the tank pit, were analyzed for total extractable petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TEPHd)
using Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 8015, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total
xylene isomers (BTEX) using EPA Method 8020, and methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) using EPA
Method 8260. The two composite soil samples (SP-1-[1-4]) were also analyzed for volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) using EPA method 8010, and 17 California Assessment Manual (17 CAM) Metals
using the appropriate EPA 6000 or 7000 series method. An additional composite soil sample (SP-2-[1-
4]) was collected from the stockpile following a hydraulic fluid spill. This sample (SP-2-[1-4]) was
analyzed for total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons as oil and grease (TRPH O&G) using EPA
method 5520 E and F.
NATIVE SOIL SAMPLES
Laboratory analysis of native soil samples collected from the UST pit did not detect TEPHd, BTEX, or
MTBE at or above the laboratory method detection limits.
STOCKPILE SOIL SAMPLES
Laboratory analysis of soil samples collected from the soil stockpile on December 18, 1998 and January
6, 1999, did not detect MTBE, BTEX, or VOC's at or above laboratory method detection limits.
TEPHd and TRPH were detected at 86 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) and 5,300 mg/kg,
respectively. The additional 17 CAM metals analysis detected the following in two of the samples:
Arsenic at 6.4 mg/kg, Barium at 170 mg/kg, Chromium at 12 mg/kg, Copper at 13 mg/kg, Lead at 11
mg/kg, Nickel at 13 mg/kg, Vanadium at 28 mg/kg, and Zinc at 54 mg/kg.
UST CAVITY BACKFILL
On December 24, 1998, following receipt of the laboratory analysis results for the soil samples
collected from the UST pit, CPEI backfilled the UST excavation with imported fill material.
SOIL STOCKPILE DISPOSAL
On February 9, 1999, B.E.L.S.H.I.R.E. of El Toro, California transported approximately 50 tons of
soil generated during UST removal activities to the Thermo Process Systems Technologies, Inc. (TPS)
soil recycling facility in Richmond, California for disposal as a non-hazardous waste (documentation
attached).
RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the results of soil sample analyses, field observations and site assessment, and disposal of
hydrocarbon-impacted soil, GTE requests site closure from the County and that the County grant a no
further action status.
ii
