Health & Safety Plan
4.0 POTENTIAL EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS
1. Potential exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons and volatile organic
compounds may occur during tank removal, (inerting), soil sampling,
excavation of contaminated soil, leak repair and excavation dewatering.
The primary routes of entry for petroleum hydrocarbons and volatile
organics are:
*inhalation of dust and/or vapors,
*ingestion
*skin and eye contact
2. Skin contact with volatile organic compounds may cause skin
irritations. Chronic overexposure from inhalation may result in liver and
kidney damage. Some of the potential contaminants may cause central
nervous system depression; long-term exposure by inhalation may cause
death.
3. Potential exposures in this project will most probably occur outdoors,
be of short duration and are not likely to pose a significant hazard.
4. If physical contact with contaminated soils or liquids is anticipated,
the appropriate safety precautions must be taken. Before any attempt to
deal with hazardous materials, Contractor must seek approval from Health
and Safety Officer.
5. In case of fire or explosion all work must cease immediately.
Personnel are required to evacuate as quickly and safely as possible. In
case of fire, CPEI Corporation will announce the location of the fire so that
