Following is a basic list of equipment
which should be available before in-
stallation. Always be certain that
appropriate tapering tools and adhe-
sive kits are at the job site.
Note: Use the proper tapering tool for
tapering each size of pipe. See Sec-
tion 5.
1.3.1 Recommended equipment for
cool weather (below 70'F/21'C) pipe
assembly
1. Heat source for prewarming
a. electric heating collar"', or
b. portable electric heat lamp, or
c. hot air blower
2. A means of maintaining adhesive
kits at 70-80°F (21-27°C). Use a
box with a 25 watt light bulb, or
keep the adhesive in a heated truck
cab or building.
3. Heat assisted curing source
a. electric heating collars
When using electric heating
collars, make sure that an ad-
equate power source is avail-
able and that extension cords
are properly sized. Wattage re-
quirements are as shown in
Table 1.3.1.
As the length of the extension
cord increases, the power lost
in the cord increases. Table
1.3.2 shows maximum allow-
able length for various size
cords.
b. Smith Heat Packs"'
Chemical heat packs are avail-
able for use in locations where
it is impractical to use electric
heating collars. Chemical heat
packs may leave residue on the
pipe surface and are best suited
for use where appearance is
not a concern.
Note: The overall effectiveness
of chemical heat packs de-
pends on ambient temperatures.
Smith Fiberglass Products rec-
ommends using insulation
when the ambient temperature
(still air) or the wind chill is 32° F
(0°C) or less. Insulation is of-
fered as an optional item by
Smith Fiberglass Products.
Each kit is marked with an ex-
piration date. Do not use kit
after that date.
1.3.2 Recommended equipment for
installing 2"-4" (50-100mm) pipe
TABLE 1.3.1
WATTAGE REQUIREMENTS FOR ELECTRIC HEATING COLLARS
"' Available from Smith Fiberglass Products or your local distributor.
F
1. Chain vise (bench mounted or
portable) capable of securing the
pipe size used. Note: Use protec-
tive pads such as split sections of
the same size fiberglass pipe or a
sheet of 1/8 -inch (3 mm) thick rub-
ber to protect the pipe from clamp
or chain damage.
2. Tapering tool (See Section 5)
3. Felt-tip marking pen
4. Pipe cutting equipment
a. fine tooth (32 teeth/inch) hack
saw, or
b. circular saw with a crushed
tungsten carbide or rein-
forced abrasive blade, or
c. sabre saw with a fine-tooth
metal or tungsten carbide grit
blade, or
d. jigsaw with carbide grit abra-
sive blade
5. Wrap-around (for marking pipe)
6. T.A.B. wrenches (See Section 6)
7. Shop hammer, 3-6 lbs. (4-9 kg),
and a 2x4 block of wood
8. Adjustable pipe stands
9. Power drive adapter (optional) (See
Section 5)
10.
