4 a
1.2.1 Inspection
While handling, storing, and trans-
porting the pipe, it can sometimes
incur rough treatment. Therefore,
inspect all pipe surfaces for possible
damage to the pipe wall, spigot, and
bell ends. Inspect fittings for any
signs of damage. Damaged sections
of pipe must be repaired or cut out
and replaced. Damaged fittings must
be replaced. If in doubt about dam-
age, contact your local Smith Fiber-
glass Products' distributor or repre-
sentative.
Exposing machined surfaces to direct
sunlight can result in loss of joint
bonding strength (See Figure 1.2.1).
because the degree of weathering,
surface degradation, and subsequent
effect on bond strength varies greatly
depending on geographic location
and related factors such as cloud
cover, seasonal hours of daylight,
intensity of sunlight, humidity, etc., it
is difficult to place a fixed time limit
on the acceptable amount of expo-
sure.
Therefore, in all instances where pro-
tective coverings were removed from
machined surfaces and ultravioletex-
V/
Figure 1.2.1
posure was in excess of one day,
corrective action must be taken. See
paragraph 1.8.1.
1.2.2 Installation crew size and orga-
nization
Each installation is different, and re-
quirements change depending on
whether the installation is simple—
consisting of long, straight runs— or
complex. Requirements are also af-
fected by pipe size, installation tem-
perature, and similar influences. For
guidance for specific circumstances,
consult your Smith Fiberglass Prod-
ucts' distributor or representative.
S 1111T
<t
Following are general guidelines that
are applicable to most piping instal-
lations:
For most average -size service sta
tions, a two -worker crew is the
minimum recommended crew
size. It is suggested that the crew
size be increased as the pipe diam-
eter increases or when installing
secondary containment piping.
2. Organize the crew so that the
adhesive is spread on the bonding
surfaces as quickly as possible af-
ter mixing the adhesive— particu-
larly in extremely hot weather.
Before beginning any installation, it
3.
