>F�sEacll.nssADHESIVE BONDING AND CURING 2.7.1 Introduction Before bonding the two-piece con- tainment fittings, the installation pro- cedures should be reviewed with the installation crew members. In order to maintain the efficiency of the in- stallation, a minimum of three work- ers is recommended: one worker to mix and apply adhesive to the sec- ondary containment fittings, and the two remaining workers to assemble and bolt the fittings together. For secondary containment systems conveying alcohols or alcohol/gaso- line blends, use DS -8000 series or DS -7000 series adhesive. (NOTE: For primary systems conveying alcohols or alcohol/gasoline blends, use DS - 8000 series or DS -4000 series adhe- sive.) Follow the adhesive mixing instruc- tion that are packaged with each kit. FILLER MUST BE ADDED TO THICKEN THE ADHESIVE. The filler is packaged in premeasured quantities for use with DS -7014 or DS -8014 and DS -7069 or DS -8069 adhesive kits. One bag of filler is used for each adhesive kit. Before adding the filler to the mixed adhesive, be sure both the adhesive base and hard- ener are thoroughly mixed together. All of the filler in the bag should be used. The thickened adhesive maybe applied with either the brush or the stir stick provided in the kit. Refer to Table 2.7.1 for the number of containment fittings that can be bonded per adhesive kit. Note: Number of containment fit- tings per adhesive kit is based on applying a 1/16 -inch (1.6 mm) mini- mum thickness of adhesive to both halves of the fitting and to the pipe ends. 2.7.2 Cleaning the bonding surfaces Smith Fiberglass Products has deter- mined that cleaning the bonding sur- face is required only when the bond- ingsurfaces, on either pipe or fittings, have been contaminated by grease, oil, dirt, fingerprints, etc. Freshly tapered spigots or scarfs or factory - fresh spigots, scarfs or bells do not require solvent cleaning unless vis- ibly contaminated. DONOTTOUCH THE BONDING SURFACES OR AL- LOW THEM TO BECOME CON- TAMINATED. Acceptable cleaning methods for containment piping are: • Sand all bonding surfaces until contaminated area is removed. • Dirt contamination can be re- moved by water washing. Be sure the surfaces are dry before bonding. Note: Use of solvent as a cleaning method is optional. If preferred by the customer, use solvent. 1,1,1 Trichlorethane is available from Smith Fiberglass Products. Some alternate cleaning solvents available through local hardware or industrial supply houses are: acetone, alcohol, meth- ylene chloride and methyl ethyl ke- tone. After cleaning, be sure any residual solvent has evaporated be- fore application of adhesive. DO NOT USE SOLVENTS WHICH LEAVE AN OILY FILM ON THE BONDING SURFACES. WARNING: Some degreasers and solvents are extremely flammable. Be sure to read warning labels on containers.
