y . •
3. Bell Holes: Hand shape bell holes for bell and spigot and coupled pipe, so bell or coupling does not
bear weight of pipe. Do not dig more than 6 bell holes ahead of pipe laying operations.
4. Safety Precautions: Provide safety shoring, bracing, or bulkheading to support excavations; maintain
warning signs and barricades. Provide temporary wood or steel plate covers over excavations crossing
roadways or walks. Keep excavations free of water. Safeguard public health and property in disposal
of water.
5. Protection to Trees: Excavate adjacent to trees by hand to avoid injury to trees and roots. Protect roots
2 inch in diameter and larger with heavy burlap. Hand trim roots smaller than 2 inch adjacent to trees.
Seal cuts through roots 1/2 inch and larger with tree trimmers asphaltic emulsion. If trenches remain
open more than 24 hours, shade site of trench adjacent to tree with burlap and keep damp. Do not
stockpile materials within drip line of trees.
C. Backfilling:
1. General:
a. Do not place backfill until work has been inspected, tested and approve. Backfill in 6 inch layers
and bring up evenly on both sides of pipe or structure. Compact by hand or with pneumatic hand
tamper to not less than 90 percent relative compaction per Test Method Calif No. 216. Equipment
compaction, flooding or puddling not permitted except upon written approval.
b. Do not backfill concrete structures until concrete has set sufficiently so as not to be disturbed.
2. Materials:
a. Backfill up to 6 inches minimum above top of pipe with sand or fine earth, 1/2 inch max size
particles; for wrapped or coated pipe or plastic pipe use sand only.
b. Backfill tanks up to 3 feet above tanks with sand or pea gravel or backfill materials as approved by
the State.
c. Continue backfill up to finished grade with excavated material or other approved materials, free
from rocks or lumps greater than 4 inch, except:
1) Backfill top 12 inches under roads, walks or paving with sand, gravel or crushed rock, 1/2 inch
max size.
2) Backfill to 6 inches for planted areas with topsoil.
d. Remove surplus material remaining after backfilling from State property or place as directed.
3. Shoring: Remove shoring as backfill is placed. Cut off shoring driven below invert of pipe at top of
pipe.
4. Planted Areas:
a. Replace or replant shrubs or ground cover plants in kind.
b. Repair lawn areas damaged by project work. Thoroughly till soil 6 inches deep, smoothly blend
grading to existing lawns.
1) Seed with grass mixture consisting of 45 percent Kentucky Blue Grass, 45 percent Creeping
Red Fescue and 10 percent Red. Top at rate of 4 pounds per 1000 square feet. Fertilize with
ammonium sulphate at rate of 20 pounds per 1000 square feet. Over seeded areas place 1/8
inch of mulch consisting of peat or finely ground bark.
5. Paved Surfaces: Make neat surface cuts. Use rotary saw for cutting concrete. Replace roads, walks,
paving or similar surfaces to match existing work, except do not use material of lesser quality than
specified in General Work.
