Thornton Rd.,Lodi, San Joaquin County, California. Permit#SR0062195
Dear Mr. Cacapit:
On behalf of Pilot Travel Centers LLC (Pilot), Broadbent&Associates, Inc. (BAI) is
pleased to present this Diesel Pipeline Closure Confirmation Report for the Pilot-Flying J Travel
Center #617 located at 15100 N. Thornton Rd., Lodi, San Joaquin County, California(Site). As
part of recent station upgrade construction plans, three diesel underground storage tanks(USTs)
were converted to gasoline tanks by removing approximately 20 feet of diesel product piping and
installing new gasoline piping from the converted USTs to the existing product delivery lines. In
accordance with San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department(SJCEHD)piping
removal and closure requirements, soil samples were collected from below diesel pipelines
before their removal to check for petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. A copy of the SJCEHD
piping removal permit(Permit#SR0062195)and sampling protocols are included as Appendix
A. A Site Location Map and Site Plan are provided at the conclusion of this letter report's text as
Drawings 1 and 2, respectively.
On August 16, 2011, BAI field personnel met with SJCEHD personnel at the Site to
collect confirmation soil samples for laboratory analysis in accordance with the guidelines
outlined in the SJCEHD's Sampling Protocol far Routine Tank Removals. Upon BAI's arrival at
the Site, the pipeline trench excavation was already open to approximately 5.5 to 6.5 feet below
grade(fbg) and with diesel pipelines exposed. Soil sample P-1 (5.5 fbg)and P-2 (6.3 fbg) were
collected from soil under the piping using a clean shovel and directly transferred into 8 oz.
precleaned clear wide-mouth glass jars with solid Teflon-lined caps. Samples P-1 and P-2 were
dry and no visible soil staining was observed. A sample of excavated trench material was
requested by the regulatory field personnel; however, the material consisted of pea gravel and a
sample was not collected for analysis. Soil sample locations of are exhibited in the Piping
Trench Sample Location provided as Drawing 3.
Soil samples P-1 and P-2 were submitted under chain-of-custody protocol to Alpha
Analytical Laboratory, Inc. of Sparks, Nevada for analysis of Diesel Range Organics(DRO)by
EPA Method 8015B and fuel constituents Benzene,Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Total Xylenes
CALIFORNIA ARIZONA NEVADA TEXAS
