California Ronal Water Quality *ntrol Board
_ Central Valley Region B
Peter M.Rooney Sacramento Alain Office Ed J.Schnabel
Secretary for Internet Address: http://www.swrcb.ca.gov/—rwgcb5/home.htmi Chair
Environmental 3443 Routier Road,Suite A,Sacramento,California 95827-3003
Protection Phone(916)255-3000-FAX(916)255-3015
27 July 1998
Ms. Nancy Bishop
Western Farm Service
3650 Mt. Diablo Boulevard, Suite 260
Lafayette, California 94549
REVIEW OF DOCUMENTS FOR WESTERN FARM SERVICE SITE IN VERNALIS,
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
I have reviewed the 29 January 1998 1997 Annual Report and Results of December 1997
Groundwater Monitoring, 29 April Results of March 1998 Groundwater Monitoring, and 21 May
Investigation Report: Results of Deep Groundwater Investigation, Additional Well Installation, and
Domestic Well Sampling for the Western Farm Service site at 35100 South Highway 33, Vernalis.
These reports were prepared by GeoSyntec Consultants, your consultant. The April monitoring
report is acceptable. The following are my comments on the other reports.
1. The first page of the January report states groundwater data for five quarters are included in the
report. On page two the reports states six quarters of groundwater monitoring have been
performed. Data from five sampling events are presented in tables in the report. Text needs to
be consistent with data presented.
2. In the May report, results of water samples collected from the two deep cone penetrometer
borings show pesticides have not migrated to deeper water bearing zones, and fertilizer
compounds are below levels of concern. Therefore, no additional sampling of deeper
groundwater is necessary at this time.
3. The May report did not show the location of the domestic well at 34960 South Highway 33 on
Figure 2 or Figure 3. The report also did not include a log showing where this well is screened
and the depth to groundwater in the well.
4. New monitoring wells MW-4 and MW-5 provide additional definition of the extent of
contaminants upgradient and downgradient of the site. However, these wells do not entirely
characterize the plume of contaminants, nor does the current well network provide long term
monitoring of the entire plume. Definition of the lateral extent of contaminants in groundwater
is needed north of well MW-2. Also, water samples from well MW-5 and grab water samples
collected in May 1997 showed nitrate above 10 mg/1 downgradient of wells MW-2 and MW-3.
California Environmental Protection Agency
fir?Recycled Paper
