It means preventing the spread of illnesses in <br /> the health-care facility (called nosocornial illnesses). <br /> These illnesses may include: <br /> • Urinary tract infections <br /> • Post-operative infections <br /> • Respiratory infections <br /> • Foodborne illnesses <br /> • Hepatitis B and AIDS <br /> • Antibiotic-resistant infections <br /> The danger-of infection is always present. <br /> WHY is infection control " use it's vital to your <br /> patients' well-being—and your own! For example, infections can: <br /> o Make you sick and keep you out of work. <br /> o Spread to others, including patients, family and fiiends. <br /> o Lengthen a patient's stay in the hospital and increase health-care <br /> costs. <br /> It's up to us to help prevent infeefiom <br /> WHY do infections occur inhealth-care facilites? There are 2 basic <br /> reasons. <br /> 1. Many sick people are treated in close quarters. <br /> • Many microorganisms(bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites) <br /> that can cause harm are present. <br /> • Frequent contacts are made between people who have or can <br /> spread illness and people who are at risk for infection. <br /> • Large amounts of contaminated washes, equipment and supplies <br /> must be handled and processed. <br />
