POLICY <br /> It is the policy of Lodi Memorial Hospital that Environmental Services Technicians are trained in the <br /> appropriate measures for collection of medical waste prior to being scheduled to perform such duties. <br /> II. PURPOSE <br /> To protect those hospital employees who are authorized to handle medical waste. <br /> III. PROCEDURE <br /> A. Documentation of the orientation and training of these employees is kept on file in the Environmental <br /> Services office. <br /> B. Always use the correct Personal Protective Equipment(PPE)during collection or handling of medical <br /> waste, including the use of fluid-proof gloves, cover coat and face shield when there may be a risk of <br /> splashing the face as during the clean-up of a spill. <br /> C. Medical waste is removed from the source of generation by nursing and then placed into collection <br /> tubs located inside dirty utility rooms at each facility to be collected by Environmental Services <br /> Technicians. <br /> D. The Medical Waste Disposal Vendor exchanges sharps containers for an empty one. The filled <br /> container is then placed onto the"Sharps Containers Only"collection rack. This containment rack is <br /> then placed in the designated biohazard accumulation area ready for offsite disposal. Environmental <br /> Services is responsible to replace full sharps container with empty containers between vendor pick ups <br /> if a container becomes full. <br /> E.
