2c"J� qn-1 JV 0 6 <br />LODI MEMORIAL HOSPITAL <br />POLICY: <br />PROCEDURE: <br />Page 1 of 4 #814 <br />8480 <br />Effective: 6/90 <br />Engineering Department <br />Waste Sterilizer <br />It is the policy of Lodi Memorial Hospital to render infectious waste to a sterile state prior <br />to disposal in the solid waste compactor. <br />Special Instructions <br />A. The only material to be sterilized in this unit shall be that which is determined to be <br />"INFECTIOUS CONTAMINATED WASTE" according to Title 22 specifications. <br />B. Operation may be performed only by those employees of the Housekeeping or <br />Engineering Departments. <br />1. All employees required to operate the waste sterilizer must be trained/oriented in <br />the full operation of the unit prior to initiating operational actions. <br />2. Training will be provided and documented by a designated Housekeeping <br />Department manager. Training documentation will remain on file in the <br />department in which the user is employed. <br />C. Each load will run for a minimum of 30 minutes and be maintained at a temperature <br />reading of 280 degrees F. <br />1. The pressure gauge will read 40 lbs. pressure while in operation. <br />D. All waste to be sterilized will be secured inside the appropriate sterilizing bags that are <br />designed with a color strip attached and readily visible prior to sterilization. <br />II. Waste Preparation for Processing <br />A. Always wear protective gloves and cover gowns when handling infectious waste prior to <br />processing. <br />B. Transport infectious waste from collection points to the sterilizing unit in the approved <br />"INFECTIOUS WASTE CART" only. <br />C. Place all infectious waste for processing into the clear autoclave bags with orange color <br />markings on the bag. Use the twister strip to securely close each bag. <br />1. The approved autoclave bags provided, have a color strip attached that will turn <br />brown in color when an acceptable processing level has been reached. This <br />brown strip will indicate completion of the processing cycle as required. <br />
