0 0
INCTION CONTROL PRACTICES: MORGUE
I. Cadavers
A. When cadavers are suspected of having been actively infected, this infor-
mation should be transmitted to the pathologist prior to autopsy approval.
Bodies should be tagged with the appropriate isolation sign, transported
immediately to the morgue and placed in one of the body refrigerators.
B. All cadavers bearing contagious or easily communicable infections should be
delivered to the undertaker in a sealed plastic shroud appropriately labeled
Witt' the suspected infection.
II. Personnel
A. Should adhere strictly to all personnel health policies.
B. Should be adequately briefed in the techniques of infection prevention before
working in or entering autopsy suite.
C. Should not eat, drink, or smoke in the autopsy suite.
III. Dress code and practices for specific -disease autopsies
A. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: the autopsy should be conducted in a small
separate room. All individuals should wear gowns, caps, masks, shoe covers,
goggles, and gloves. All tissues should be handled as infectious. Tissue
samples should be placed in formalin. Reusable instruments should be washed
thoroughly in tap water, then autoclaved for a minimum of 30 minutes at 121
degrees C. Floors and any spills should be gashed thoroughly with 5% hypo-
chlorite solution, and disposable items should be incinerated. Participants
should crash hands thoroughly with a 5% hypochlorite solution at the termi-
nation of the procedure.
B. Possible pulmonary tuberculosis: autopsy should be carried out in a separate
room with a 100% fresh -air separate air conditioning system. All participants
should wear masks throughout the proved°ire. Individuals with cuts or scratches
on their hands should wear gloves whenever entering a room where this kind of
autopsy is being performed.
C. Hepatitis B: all individuals participating in the procedure should wear
goggles, masks, gowns, and gloves. All tissues should be handled as infectious.
Collected body fluid should be removed by suction, never by splashing. Only
necessary tissues should be examined, preferably by biopsy rather than by total -
tissue removal. any tissues taken for exar,'ination should be fixed in formalin
for at least seven days before sectioning. All spills, floors, and autopsy
tables should be washed down with 5% hypochlorite solution or 2% glutaral-
dehyde following termination of the autopsy. The body cavities of the cadaver
should be packed with gauze soaked in 5% hype;chlorite. Special precautions
should be tacen while sewing up the incisions. All personnel participating
in the autopsy should be thoroughly briefed before, during, and after the
procedure.
D. Meningococcemia: all participants should be thoroughly briefed before the
autopsy begins, and should wear masks and gloves. The cadaver should be
sealed in a plastic shroud before being delivered to the mortician.
E. Marburg or Lassa fever virus: under usual circumstances, autopsies should
not be performed on these individuals.
continued on next page------------------
