4 0
St. Josephs Medical Center
A member of CHW
December 21, 2011
Donna Heran
Environmental Health Department
600 E Main Street
Stockton, CA 95202-3029
Ms. Heran,
In response to the noted violation during the recent San Joaquin County medical waste inspection at St.
Joseph's Medical Centers at 1800 N California Street, Stockton, Ca 95204 on November 14, 2011 (Follow
up inspection and report issued on November 28, 2011).
#20 — A red biohazard bag is being stored in a large grey Rubbermaid brute container. The
container did not have the required labeling for a medical waste container.
To contain biohazard bags, the bags must be placed in a rigid container labeled with the wording
"Biohazardous Waste" or with the international biohazard symbol and the word "Biohazard" on the
lid and on the sides so as to be visible from any lateral direction.
Biohazard label was placed on the container on November 15th, 2011.
#20.1 — Onsite linen hampers are being used to contain red biohazard bags.
Red biohazard bags must be placed for the purposes at storage, collection, handling, or transport in
a rigid container.
Stop the use of linen hampers for the containenzation of red biohazard bags and begin using
rigid.
Containers to prevent leakage of expulsion of content during all future storage, handling or
transport
Submit to this Enforcement Agency (EA) Corrective Action Letter with photos within 30
days.
Due to the cryptic nature of the Medical Waste Management Act, it is the belief of the medical center that
we are in compliance. The non -rigid containers are currently in our Labor and Delivery wing where
medical waste is generated in the Labor and Delivery rooms. The rooms are cleaned and sanitized almost
immediately, at which time medical waste is removed from the room and placed into a rigid container
which is located in our soiled utility room. The medical waste is stored in a rigid container until it is
transported via a rigid container to the onsite sterilizer.
