ST. DOM1C'S HOSPITAL <br /> HOUSEKEEPING DEPARTMENT <br /> POLICIES AND PROCEDURES <br /> DISPOSAL OF INFECTIOUS WASTE <br /> 1. PURPOSE <br /> To ensure appropriate procedures for collecting and disposing of infectious <br /> waste. <br /> To prevent injury to or infection of personnel handling the infectious waste. <br /> Definition: <br /> Infectious waste shall be defined as: <br /> 1. Significant laboratory wastes, including pathologic specimens (which shall <br /> include all tissues, specimens, or blood elements, excreta and secretions <br /> obtained from patients) and disposable fomites (which shall include any <br /> substance which may harbor or transmit organisms). <br /> 2. Surgical specimens and attendant disposable fomites. <br /> 3. Similar disposable material from outpatient areas and emergency rooms. <br /> 4. Equipment, instruments, utensils, and fomites of disposable nature from <br /> the rooms of patents with suspected or diagnosed communicable disease <br /> requiring isolation. <br /> Materials: <br /> 1. Red plastic bags for #1, #2, and #3 (above). <br /> 2. Red plastic bags for #4 (above). <br /> 3. Red waste container in each area of patent care. <br /> 11. PROCEDURE <br /> A. Solid Infectious waste <br /> 1. Employees (appropriately attired) working with "isolation" or <br /> "infectious* waste shall dispose materials in a red plastic bag. <br /> Employee shoWd wear gloves and apron when handling infectious <br /> waste. <br /> 0-4 <br />
