The hospital infectious waste bin contents will be transported and <br /> disposed of by an approved, certified, hauler in an approved sanitary <br /> land fill. Infectious waste may not be stored for more than 4 days. <br /> 8. Infectious waste will be transported to the Infectious Waste holding <br /> area at the rear of the hospital by way of the loading dock. <br /> a. The entrance left of the dock will be designated as the area <br /> through which infectious waste passes. <br /> b. At no time will infectious waste pass through the storeroom area <br /> or infringe upon the designated loading dock "clean" area. <br /> c. All incoming "clean"supplies will enter through the main storeroom <br /> door, and will at no time infringe upon the designated loading <br /> dock "dirty" area. <br /> 9. The following departments or areas are approved for disposal of all <br /> patient care waste as "infectious": Surgery, Labor and Delivery area. <br /> 10. ICD will have one red trash bin and one regular trash can in each <br /> room. The Emergency Room will have red trash bins in the trauma <br /> rooms. All other nursing units will have two infectious waste hampers <br /> located in the dirty utility room. <br /> 11. Any excessively bloody material, full suction canisters and pleur-vacs <br /> will be put into the infectious waste hampers. Emptied suction <br /> canisters and chux can be put into the regular trash. <br /> 12. Refer to departmental infection control guidelines for Infection Waste <br /> procedures in departments other than nursing. <br /> 13. Any infectious waste or hazardous waste that is improperly contained, <br /> handled or disposed of must be reported to Management on the date <br /> of the occurrence. An Incident Report must be completed relative to <br /> the occurrence on the same day. <br /> B. Microbiology Cultures: <br /> Cultures of viable etiologic agents sh0 be rendered noninfectious before <br /> disposal to land by heating the cultures in a stream sterilizer or by <br /> incineration.
