0 0 <br /> COLLECTION AND DISPOSAL OF INFECTIOUS WASTE <br /> Ill. EQUIPMENT <br /> A. Red plastic bags for all disposable infectious waste. Each bag shall be <br /> constructed of material of sufficient single strength to pass the 165 gram <br /> dropped dart impact resistance test as presented by Standard D 1709-75 of <br /> American Society of Testing and Materials and certified by the bag <br /> manufacturer. The bags must be labeled as Infectious Waste or with <br /> biohazard symbol. <br /> B. Clear plastic contaminated material bags for Letter "13" in definition of <br /> infectious waste. <br /> C. Waste container in each area of patient care labeled "Infectious Waste" on <br /> the lid. The bags used must be leak proof and with tight fitting cover. <br /> D. Infectious Waste transportation cart which is leak proof and with a tight fitting <br /> cover. <br /> E. Container or bin for infectious waste with labels reading legible from a <br /> distance of 25 feet in English and Spanish stating "Caution-Infectious Waste <br /> Storage Area-Unauthorized Persons Keep Out'. Container must be secured <br /> so as to prevent any access to unauthorized persons. <br /> IV. PROCEDURE <br /> A. Solid infectious waste: <br /> 1. Employees shall dispose of infectious waste in red bags as described <br /> in Ill A - Equipment. <br /> 2. These bags are to be kept securely tied so as to prevent leakage <br /> during handling or transport. <br /> 3. The red bags are to be placed in the closest Infectious Waste <br /> container. Infectious waste bags are not to be stored on the floor. <br /> 4. Bag material going to Central Service to be sterilized in clear plastic <br /> contaminated material bags. <br /> 5. Housekeeping will routinely pick up infectious waste. Notify <br /> Housekeeping if an additional collection is required. <br /> 6. Housekeeping will transport infectious waste in an infectious waste <br /> transportation cart to a separate infectious waste bin located on the <br />
