PURPOSE <br /> To prevent contamination of the environment or transmission of infection to- <br /> patients or healthcare workers. <br /> Ill. EQUIPMENT <br /> A. Biohazard bag means a disposable red bag which is impervious to <br /> moisture and has a str6nth sufficient to preclude ripping, tearing or <br /> bursting under normal conditions of usage and handling..of the waste filled <br /> bag. A Biohazard bag will be constructed of material of sufficient single <br /> thickness strength to pass the 165 gram dropped dart impact resistant test <br /> as prescribed by Standard D.1709-85 of the American Society for Testing <br /> and Materials and certified y the, bag manufacturer. <br /> B. Medical Waste containers will be placed in each area of patient care labeled <br /> with "Biohazardous Waste" on the lid. <br /> C. Sharps containers will be rigid, puncture resistant and leak resistant when <br /> sealed; labeled "Sharps Waste" or "Biohazard"with international biohazard <br /> symbol. <br /> D. The medical waste transportation cart will be leak-proof and have a tight <br /> fitting cover. <br /> E. The container bin for medical waste will be labeled with the words <br /> "Biohazardous Waste" or with the international biohazard symbol and the <br /> word "BIOHAZARD"on the lid and on the sides so as to be visible from any <br /> lateral direction. <br /> IV. PROCEDURE <br /> A. Medical Waste <br /> 1. Employees shall dispose of medical waste in red medical waste bags <br /> as described in Section III A - Equipment. <br /> 2. All sharps wastes will be placed into a sharps container. <br /> 3. Sharps containers will not be filled more than three-q!,arters full. <br /> Page 2 of 4 <br />
