• <br />PHARMACEUTICAL WASTE <br />Methods of segregation and containment <br />1. Pharmaceutical Waste shall be segregated at the point of origin. <br />2. All outdated, contaminated, mislabeled or otherwise non -usable medications are to be <br />placed in containers labeled in such a manner so as to clearly distinguish them from all <br />other waste categories. These containers shall be maintained at points of origin on housing <br />units and other designated clinical areas. <br />3. Pharmaceutical return to stock items shall be segregated from biohazardous waste at the <br />point of origin and placed in containers and labeled in such a manner to clearly distinguish <br />them from all other medical waste categories. <br />4. Pharmacy Services shall store all outdated, contaminated, mislabeled or otherwise non -usable <br />medications in authorized medication trash bins or containers in designated areas within the <br />pharmacy. The medication trash bins or containers shall be clearly identified and/or labeled. <br />5. Each pharmacy pick station and two IV rooms shall contain bins for chemotherapeutic and non - <br />chemotherapeutic medications. Pharmaceutical and chemical waste containers will be <br />maintained in the chemo compounding room and in medication rooms and medication carts <br />throughout the facility. <br />6. A white bin with a blue top shall be used for non -chemotherapeutic waste and yellow bins with <br />white tops shall be used for chemotherapeutic waste. <br />7. All pharmaceutical waste containers shall be in compliance with applicable laws and regulations <br />and shall be affixed with appropriate labels or markings to distinguish them from other waste <br />categories. Pharmaceutical waste containers shall be labeled with the words <br />"INCINERATION ONLY" on the lid and on the sides. <br />8. Environmental staff shall pick up the pharmaceutical waste from the medication room on the <br />housing units and transport them to the unit HUT, a secured area not accessible to inmate - <br />patients. MSC staff is shall collect pharmaceutical waste from the HUT areas and transport it <br />to the designated accumulation area at the MSC. The Warehouse manager II shall be <br />responsible for ensuring this process is carried out. <br />Procedures for handling pharmaceutical spills or exposures <br />1. Pharmacy staff shall reduce the risk of personal or environmental exposure by aerosol <br />generation, spraying or spillage of parenteral, anti -neoplastic medications when handling vials, <br />needles, syringes, glass ampoules, and IV bottles or bags by performing the following: <br />
