a. Pressure -equalize vials containing reconstituted parenteral antineoplastic in order to <br />reduce the possibility of spraying when a needle is withdrawn from the septum of the <br />cap. <br />b. Use syringes and IV sets with Luer -Lok fittings. <br />c. To open a glass ampoule, wipe the ampoule with alcohol before opening, tap down the <br />contents gently from the neck and the top portion of the ampoule and wrap the neck of <br />the ampoule with a sterile gauze pad when opening. <br />d. Venting divices with 0.2µm hydrophobic filters and 5µm needles may be used. <br />e. External surfaces of syringes and IV bottles shall be wiped clean of any contamination. <br />2. Chemo Spill Kit shall be kept by the Vertical Laminar Hood or in areas where anti -neoplastic <br />and cytotoxic agents are handled in the pharmacy. <br />3. A special chemotherapy label will be attached to anti -neoplastic and cytotoxic agent -containing <br />IV bottles, IV bags or pre -filled syringes prepared in the pharmacy prior to transporting to the <br />nursing units (e.g."Caution: Chemotherapy -Dispose of Properly"). <br />1. The San -I -Pak shall be operated by MSC staff trained to operate the autoclave. <br />2. Bagged medical waste, excluding pathological waste, shall be brought to the San -I -Pak 342 <br />Sterilizer/Compactor System in collection tubs. An autoclave chamber liner, which has a <br />time/temperature sensitive indicator affixed, is to be inserted into the chamber. A clamp ring <br />will then be used to hold the liner in place. <br />3. Next, the chamber shall be placed in the load position. The red bags are to then be loaded into <br />the lined sterilizer chamber with the automatic cart dumper or otherwise hand -loaded into the <br />chamber. After the chamber is loaded it will either be dog-eared or fastened with a tie strap. <br />Autoclavable tub liners may be used as an alternative to chamber liners. The lined collection <br />tubs will be filled with waste, brought to the San -I -Pak, and either dog-eared or fastened with a <br />tie strap before the waste is dumped into the chamber. When the chamber is full, it will be <br />placed into the sterilize position. <br />4. The door shall be closed and the unit's cycle is initiated. After the waste is autoclaved, the door <br />will be opened and the sterilizer chamber will automatically dump the treated waste into the <br />solid waste compactor and then compacted into the roll -off container. <br />Loading and Operating <br />6 <br />
