foodborne Pathogens Exposure Control PlanAy-
livingcenters
Standard (Universal) Precautions, Continued
Masks Masks must be worn during procedures that are likely to generate droplets
of blood or body fluids to prevent exposure of the mucous membranes of the
employee's mouth and/or nose (aerosolized procedures, etc.).
Masks should be handled by their strings and must be changed when they
become moist or soiled.
Mouthpieces, resuscitation bags or other ventilation devices should be used
as an alternative to mouth-to-mouth resuscitation methods. Theses devices
are readily available in areas where the need for resuscitation is predictable.
Note: Use NEPA filter masks for tuberculosis droplets and dry surgical
masks for mucous membrane contamination.
Gowns Gowns must be worn when there is potential for soiling clothing with
blood/body fluids and for close contact with blood/body fluids. Gowns must
be made of, or lined with, non -permeable material and worn only once and
discarded in appropriate rece tacles.
Eye wear "Eye wear" refers to goggles, face shields, etc. Protection over the eyes
must be worn during procedures (suctioning, etc.) that are likely to generate
splatter/splashing droplets of blood/body fluids.
Sharps Contaminated (used) needles must:
Not be bent or recapped
Be placed in a puncture -resistant container
Be bagged in a puncture -resistant container and returned
for decontamination and processing if reusable
Note: When holding the needle sheath, you should use either a one -handed
"scoop" technique or a mechanical device designed for this purpose.
Thermometers Thermometers must be:
® Used with single -use disposable probe covers
• Wiped off with an alcohol swab after each use
Blood/body Blood/body fluid spills are to be cleaned up promptly with a solution
fluid spills of 5.25 -percent sodium hypochlorite (household bleach) diluted 1:10 with
water or a designated facility solution.
