n <br /> Cleaning Up Spills or Splashes of Blood or Body Fluids <br /> Policy Statement Highlights <br /> All spills or splashes of blood or other body fluids will be cleaned up and the spill or splash <br /> area will be decontaminated as soon as practical. <br /> Policy Interpretation and Implementation <br /> 1. Surfaces and equipment contaminated with spills or splashes of blood or body fluids Cleaning Contaminated Surfaces <br /> must be cleaned up and disinfected as soon as practical. <br /> 2. All employees must wear gloves when cleaning up spills or splashes of blood or body Using Protective Equipment <br /> fluids. (Note: Other protective equipment(i.e., gowns,masks,and goggles) may be <br /> necessary if splashing of blood or body fluids into the eyes,nose,or mouth,or soiling <br /> of clothing is likely. Shoe coverings will be necessary if there are large amounts of <br /> blood on the floor.) <br /> 3. After cleaning up spills or splashes of blood or body fluids,the contaminated area must Disinfecting Spill and/or Splash Areas <br /> be disinfected with one of the following: <br /> a. Chemical germicides that are approved for use as hospital disinfectants and are Chemical Germicides <br /> tuberculocidal when used at recommended dilutions; <br /> b. Products registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as being EPA Products <br /> effective against HIV with an accepted"HIV(AIDS)virus"label;or <br /> c. A solution of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (household bleach) diluted between Household Bleach <br /> 1:10 and 1:100 with water. <br /> 4. On small spill or splash areas and on skin surfaces,a 70%isopropyl alcohol pledget Isopropyl Alcohol Pledgets <br /> may be used to disinfect the area. <br /> 5. Hands must be washed as soon as practical after an exposure to blood or body fluids. Handwashing <br /> 6. All patients' blood and body fluids should be considered potentially infectious. Any Reporting an Exposure to Blood and/ <br /> exposure to a patient's blood or body fluids should be reported to the infection control or Body Fluids <br /> coordinator. <br /> 7.
