R
TITLE: BLOOD AND BODY FLUID SPILLS, CLEANING AND DECONTAMINATING
Whenever a spill of blood or other body fluid occurs, a trained employee will assume
responsibility for cleaning and decontaminating the spill. The following precautions and steps
will be observed:
1. Gloves must be worn during the cleaning and decontaminating procedures (other
protective wear to be utilized as necessary, e.g., goggles).
2. The contaminated area will be flooded with our house disinfectant before
cleaning. A prepackaged "Blood Spill Kit" may be utilized.
3. Absorbable cloths, rags or disposable towels will be used to soak up the fluid.
4. Decontaminate the area with a disinfectant cleaner.
5. Finally wipe with an absorbent disposable cloth, rag or disposable towel.
6. Throughout the process, dispose of absorbent cloths/towels in the red bags.
Note: For large blood spills, use kit located in medication room, emergency cart,
nursing station or pre-identified area.
