R <br /> TITLE: BLOOD AND BODY FLUID SPILLS, CLEANING AND DECONTAMINATING <br /> Whenever a spill of blood or other body fluid occurs, a trained employee will assume <br /> responsibility for cleaning and decontaminating the spill. The following precautions and steps <br /> will be observed: <br /> 1. Gloves must be worn during the cleaning and decontaminating procedures (other <br /> protective wear to be utilized as necessary, e.g., goggles). <br /> 2. The contaminated area will be flooded with our house disinfectant before <br /> cleaning. A prepackaged "Blood Spill Kit" may be utilized. <br /> 3. Absorbable cloths, rags or disposable towels will be used to soak up the fluid. <br /> 4. Decontaminate the area with a disinfectant cleaner. <br /> 5. Finally wipe with an absorbent disposable cloth, rag or disposable towel. <br /> 6. Throughout the process, dispose of absorbent cloths/towels in the red bags. <br /> Note: For large blood spills, use kit located in medication room, emergency cart, <br /> nursing station or pre-identified area. <br />
