Vienna Nursing and Rehabilitation Center
MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN
PHARMACEUTICAL WASTE
Pharmaceutical waste must be segregated and packaged into appropriate containers,
separated from other biohazard waste and sharps waste. Containers for pharmaceutical waste
are to be placed in a pharmaceutical sharps type containers. They are considered full when they
reach the manufacturer's "fill" line. Lids on the filled pharmaceutical waste containers must be
closed and sealed to prevent loss of contents. They are typically blue and white in color and/or
labeled "Pharmaceutical, For Incineration Only". When these containers are full and ready for
disposal, it will be removed from the interim storage area and will be taken to the designated
accumulation area. Pharmaceutical waste can not be placed into the regulated medical waste
red bag or into the regulated medical waste sharps container. Pharmaceutical waste containers
will be placed inside a clear bag and into a secondary container. Outside of the pharmaceutical
secondary container states "For Incineration Only".
