It is
impervious to moisture and has strength sufficient to preclude ripping, tearing or bursting under
normal conditions of usage and handling of the waste-filled bag. The biohazard film bag is
marked and certified by the manufacturer as having passed the tests prescribed for tear resistance
of 480 grams in both parallel and perpendicular planes in the American Society for Testing Materials
(ASTM) D1922 and (ASTM) D1709 standard test for impact resistance of 165 grams (drop dart
test). Documentation from the manufacturer of compliance with these minimum construction
standards will be kept on file in the Staff Development Office,
1. Biohazardous Waste
Medical Waste
• Medical waste is contained separately from other waste at the point of origin.
• Medical waste is placed in a red biohazard bag that is used to collect medical
waste within a facility. It is manufacturer certified to meet the ASTM D1709 dart drop test.
• When a bag is ready for disposal, the bag is bag not to exceed three (3) pounds or one (1)
gallon twisted and tied with an overhand knot to prevent leakage or expulsion of contents
during all future storage and handling.
• In a patient room, it is immediately transported upon completion of the procedure directly
from the point of generation and placed into a solid secondary container stored in the
biohazard waste storage area -designated Vienna's storage area of medical waste.
i
i
5
i
