A-0
Medical Waste Segregation,Containment, Labeling, and Collection Procedures:
Medical waste is contained separately from other wastes at the point of generation and placed
in a red biohazard bag, which meets the requirements of Federal, State and Local Regulatory
Agencies.A "biohazard bag" is a disposable red bag that is impervious to moisture and has
strength sufficient to preclude ripping, tearing, or bursting under normal conditions of usage and
handling of the waste-filled bag. The biohazard bag is constructed of material of sufficient single
thickness strength to pass the 165-gram dropped dart impact resistance test as required by
Standard D 1709-85 of the American Society for Testing and Materials (A.S.T.M.)
Documentation from the manufacturer of compliance with these minimum construction
standards will be kept on file in the Staff Development Office. All waste placed in a red bag is
considered to be medical waste. The red biohazard bag (when full) must be tied or otherwise
secured to prevent leakage, spillage or expulsion of contents in the event the bag is dumped
upside down.
Municipal solid wastes are not to be disposed of in medical waste containment devices.
Contaminated waste from isolation patients will be placed in RED biohazard bags labeled with
—. the words"Biohazard Waste."Any medical waste such as soaked/dripping bloody dressings,
blood tubing/ bags/ hemovacs/ pleuravacs/intact glass or plastic bottles with body fluids, all
disposables soaked or dripping with blood or OPIM, will be placed in the RED biohazard bags
labeled with words "Biohazard Waste" or the word "Biohazard"with international biohazard
symbol.
All sharps waste will be in sharps container labeled with the words "Sharps Waste" and the word
"BIOHAZARD" with the international biohazard symbol. Sharps containers will be rigid puncture
proof containers that when sealed are leak resistant and not able to be reopened without great
difficulty. Sharps containers shall be considered "full' when they reach 2/3 capacity or the
manufacturer's fill line. Lids on filled sharps containers must be snapped closed, taped, or
otherwise sealed to prevent loss of contents prior to disposal.
Medical waste will be stored, handled and transported in rigid containers with tight-fitting lids
labeled with the words°Biohazardous Waste," or the word "Biohazard," and the international
biohazard symbol on the lids and sides so that it will be visible from any lateral direction.
The designated accumulation area of Vienna used for the storage of medical waste containers
prior to transportation or treatment is located next to the municipal solid waste site (dumpster
